What a night. Opening the show all three Haim sisters took to the stage banging the drums, creating an energy in the room that raised everyone’s spirits, making us brim with excitement. The trio were empowering and effortless and I don’t know if I can really find the right words to explain just how good it felt to be stood in that audience; the atmosphere was just so… alive.

Ally Pally has a reputation as a prestigious music venue, and Este (bass player) happily exclaimed “If you would’ve told me in 2011 we were going to play Ally Pally, I would’ve said ‘F*ck you’.” The chat that follows from all three of the girls makes them come across as so relatable and genuine, and their onstage presence just feels cosy and friendly. At one-point Este realises that she’s unintentionally been doing an impression of the chef from The Little Mermaid whilst performing one of the songs, and the crowd bursts into joyous laughter.

HAIM are charming, they’re completely and utterly charming and oozing with this whimsical sense that you just know that they’re cool, they’re ‘it’ and you just want to be them. They seamlessly performed their greatest hits from the past two albums, bumping up their soft rock Fleetwood Mac style to a rockier performance packed with electric guitar solos. It really makes you realise just how good live music is.

We need to talk about ‘The Wire’. IT-WAS-SO-GOOD! A true fan favourite, this song burst out from the stage; from that beginning guitar riff the audience ecstatically began singing along with people surrounding me not just swaying to the music but full on dancing with each other.

The feel-good spirit of HAIM’s music is vibrant and thriving and this all-woman band blossoming and flourishing in the male led rock music industry is exactly what is needed today.
